Govt Alert: All Utility Stores in Pakistan to Shut Down on July 10

Islamabad: The federal government has decided to completely shut down all Utility Stores across Pakistan starting July 10, 2025. This marks a significant shift in policy, ending a decades-long initiative aimed at providing essential items to citizens at subsidized rates.
This decision, reportedly made under the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will result in the dismantling of the Utility Stores Corporation’s operational network.

Over 5,000 Employees to Enter Surplus Pool
More than 5,000 employees working under the Utility Stores Corporation will be moved to the surplus staff pool, according to official sources. As part of the restructuring plan, the government will roll out a Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) to support employees impacted by the closure.
The development follows a recent high-level meeting led by the Corporation’s Managing Director, where key decisions regarding staff adjustment and closure timelines were finalized.
Phased Shutdown Underway
Starting immediately, all operational Utility Stores across the country have begun winding down services. By July 10, none of the outlets will remain open to the public.
Inventory Relocation and Disposal
A strategy is already in place to relocate goods from retail stores to warehouses. The stored items will either be returned to suppliers or auctioned off under official supervision.
Reason Behind the Decision
The closure is part of a larger economic reform agenda, aiming to cut down on inefficiencies and minimize fiscal losses. Despite numerous attempts at restructuring and digital upgrades, Utility Stores have long been criticized for poor management and substandard service.
While some fear the closure may negatively impact low-income families who relied on discounted prices, government officials argue that alternative welfare programs will be improved to fill the gap. They also believe the move will free up public resources and streamline state-run operations.
