Punjab to Launch 2,000 EV Charging Stations to Expand Electric Bus Network

In a major step toward eco-friendly transportation, the Punjab government has announced plans to set up 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the province. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the initiative is designed to scale up the electric bus network beyond Lahore and promote clean public transit options.

Electric Bus Service to Grow After Lahore Success

Punjab launched its first fleet of electric buses in Lahore in February 2025, initially rolling out 27 buses. Due to the project’s positive reception, the government aims to add 500 more buses to the fleet by August 2025. These buses charge a nominal Rs. 20 fare and come equipped with free WiFi and phone charging ports, enhancing passenger convenience.

Following this success, the provincial government now plans to launch the service in multiple cities across Punjab, starting with the deployment of 600 electric buses in the next phase.

Planning and Coordination Meeting

The progress was reviewed in a high-level video conference led by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman from the Civil Secretariat. Key participants included officials from the transport and health departments, the CEO of Lahore Waste Management Company, and district commissioners who joined remotely along with the LDA Director General.

Deputy commissioners were instructed to identify suitable land for setting up charging stations and bus depots. The Chief Secretary underlined the government’s vision to offer safe, comfortable, and globally competitive public transportation. He also stressed the need for a focused campaign against overloaded and unsafe vehicles on roads.

Environmental Focus Behind the Move

This expansion supports Punjab’s broader efforts to tackle air pollution and smog. In May 2025, the government introduced a Vehicle Emission Testing program to monitor and reduce vehicular pollution. These initiatives are crucial to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI), which deteriorates sharply during the winter months, especially in Lahore.

Final Words

By planning to introduce 2,000 EV charging stations and 600 more electric buses, the Punjab government is setting the stage for a greener and smarter public transport system. This shift not only helps reduce the use of fossil fuels but also shows a firm commitment to building a cleaner, healthier future for its citizens.
